The FC Bayern Champions League campaign can continue. As announced by UEFA on Wednesday, Europe’s elite club competition is to restart in August following suspension due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The outstanding Round of 16 ties will be played on 7/8 August before this year's winners will be crowned at the end of a finals tournament in Lisbon from 12 to 23 August. The finals be played behind closed doors.
UEFA will decide on the exact timing and venue for the Round of 16 second leg between the German record champions and Chelsea in two weeks time. The choice of venue is between the Allianz Arena and Lisbon.
Allianz Arena due to host final in 2023
As a result of the Champions League final on 23 August being played at the Éstadio da Luz in Lisbon, the originally planned venue of Istanbul is put back to next year. All the other venue cities have agreed to postpone their finals by 12 months. That means the Allianz Arena will provide the stage for one of the biggest highlights in European club football in the summer of 2023 rather than in 2022 as originally planned.
