Bayern not only went through from a strong Group A in the eFootball.pro Cup but actually won it! On the second matchday, the FCB gamers used the good position they created with two wins last week and secured top place in the group with a goalless draw against AS Monaco. The final match against Nantes did end in a 3-2 defeat but José Sánchez & Co. could not be knocked off top spot. FC Bayern face the Juventus eSports team in the semi-final on 31 July.
The two final tables in the eFootball.pro Cup group stage:
Bayern stand out with impressive passing football
"It was a very intensive match against Monaco and both teams had really good goalscoring opportunities. We were well organised at the back and were able to go through to the semi-finals with a point. The match against Nantes was odd: we conceded goals in added time in both halves. But nevertheless we won the group," said a satisfied Alex Alguacil in assessing the matchday. Even though there was no win, Bayern again stood out with really impressive passing football. "I don't know if there is currently a Co-op team in the world that can cope with Bayer's passing game," enthused the commentator in Munich's clash with Nantes. The best example of that was the goal to make it 2-1 in this game. After a great move and a brilliant ball from Miguel Mestre, José Sánchez slotted the ball into the net. This wonder strike was also rated the goal of the matchday.
All the results on matchday two:
With plenty of confidence into the semis
Bayern finished the group level on points with Barcelona and Monaco but took first spot due to head-to-head results and a superior goal difference. League champions Monaco actually went into the tournament as favourites and have now already been knocked out. In the semi-final against Juventus, who finished second in Group B behind Manchester United, FCB have to show what they can do over two games. "We went through from the group of death in first place," said Alguacil looking at the clash with confidence. If there is no winner after the two legs then there will be a decider. There is no away goals rule in eSports. The final of the eFootball.pro Cup takes place next Friday – that is a one-off match.
