Bayern were pushed hard for a long time on the evening of 5 August 2017 in the Supercup final against Borussia Dortmund, but it had a happy ending! After a long, hard fight, the Munich side prevailed 5-4 on penalties. This made the victory even sweeter, and six Bayern stars lined up for what is now a legendary celebration photo.
The “Bayern crew” in victory photo
Arturo Vidal threw himself into a warrior stance, legs apart, hand with skull tattoo in front of his face. Kneeling in the foreground, Rafinha couldn't take his eyes off the gold and silver cup that had just been won. Thomas Müller posed like sprint star Usain Bolt and Joshua Kimmich looked a bit distant, while Franck Ribéry and Robert Lewandowski let their gaze wander into the sky or into the heavens.
With this snap, the “Bayern crew” were even up for sports photo of the year. Lewy and Co. can probably get over the fact they didn't make it to first place after winning the title in the Supercup. It remains unforgotten thanks to its dramatic course:
Penalty killer Sven Ulreich
Lewandowski (18th minute) equalised for Bayern following the opening goal from Christian Pulisic. After Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (71) renewed the BVB lead, FCB were only saved by a curious own goal from Roman Bürki (88) shortly before the end, and the game went to extra time. No more goals were scored, so the decision had to come from the penalty spot. The Munich team showed they had better nerves and Sven Ulreich became the match winner with two penalties saved.
In our “Looking back” series, fcbayern.com regularly recalls memorable moments from FCB’s photo archive. Enjoy these special snapshots, such as the unexpected goalkeeping genius of Michael Tarnat:
