Four times with the ball in the back of the net and without question the man of the evening! His goal in the 40th minute of the game to open the scoring against Hertha BSC was already a special one, never mind the other three goals, because with it Robert Lewandowski reached the next big milestone in his impressive career. It was his 100th Bundesliga goal scored in the Allianz Arena - and all of them whilst wearing the red and white of FC Bayern. And as the game progressed, it became ever clearer that he was far from finished with scoring goals this evening.
Teammates riled him up ahead of the game
Leon Goretzka found very motivating words for this colleague before kick-off: "Ahead of the game I told him he'd have to get going, considering what the others are pulling off. I think he was riled up." Lewandowski provided the answer out on the pitch. The Poland captain has now scored three or more goals in ten Bundesliga matches. Only Gerd Müller (32), Klaus Fischer and Mario Gomez (12 each) boast more. Sunday's four goals take the European Footballer of the Year to a total of 251 competitive goals in 294 matches for Bayern.
Summoning up reserves of energy
"We can perform well despite the fatigue. Robert Lewandowski shows it, he's an absolute goal-getter," Hansi Flick said in praise of the striker, but the Bayern coach did not only stress his finishes: "It’s important to me that he also adds the other elements, setting up goals and working defensively. He does so, which is why I’m very pleased with him. He has special qualities." Which is why Lewandowski is likely to set more milestones soon.
