Flick: "The absolute will to win is there"

What an incredible game! On Sunday evening, FC Bayern celebrated a 4-3 victory over Hertha BSC at home in the Allianz Arena after a real rollercoaster ride. In injury time, man of the day Robert Lewandowski scored his FOURTH goal of the evening to claim victory. "What makes me happy, where we are at 100 percent, is the mentality of the team. We have the absolute will to win," coach Hansi Flick said afterwards. Thomas Müller underlined the significance of the victory over Hertha: "It was enormously important for us to stay on the ball after these intense last few days." fcbayern.com has collected quotes below from after the game.

Reaction to Bayern v Hertha

Hansi Flick: “We must take the overall situation into account. It isn’t so easy for the players, not all of them are at 100 percent. We know we can work better in defence, act as a unit and put our opponents under pressure. We’re just lacking a few percent at the moment. But I’m pleased with the team’s mentality, we’re at 100 percent in that regard. We have the absolute desire to win. Now it’s about showing the beautiful football everybody loves after the international break. We can perform well despite the tiredness. Robert Lewandowski showed it today, he converted four chances. Robert is an absolute goal-getter. It’s important to me that he also adds the other elements, setting up goals and working defensively. He does so, which is why I’m very pleased with him. He has special qualities. A big compliment to the team, for their mentality alone. The way we played wasn’t like Bayern, we know that.”

Thomas Müller: “Of course we’re glad we’ve kept three crucial points here in Munich. Many neutrals will definitely be annoyed at our late winner. It was enormously important for us to stay on the ball after these intense last few days. We can’t be happy with our work at the back of course, which goes for the whole team. We must keep going when we’re two goals up. We want to do the things for which FC Bayern are admired. We did a few things well today but we must restore this aplomb when we’re in the lead.”

Leon Goretzka: “It was a workmanlike victory. At the moment, after the recent successes, maybe we eased off a little too early. We’ll return with fresh minds after the international break, then we’ll display some ease out on the pitch again.”

What the opponents said:

Bruno Labbadia, Hertha Berlin head coach:  "It isn't so easy to draw a conclusion today. We are deeply disappointed that we did not manage to take a point away from the game, a point that would have been deserved. The team has worked tirelessly. They kept coming back. But we conceded goals that were too easy, those really hurt. Bayern won the game because of the individual quality of Robert Lewandowski. But there could have been more in it for us and the team were not rewarded for their efforts".

Alexander Schwolow, Hertha Berlin: "After coming back like this, there is a certain amount of disbelief about the defeat. In injury time we were stupid. We never gave up in the game. All in all, we played so well. Bayern flood the area and are so hungry for goals, it's incredibly difficult. We definitely could have taken something back with us today. Unfortunately we didn't exploit it."

Niklas Stark, Hertha Berlin: "It is of course annoying. Our chance was there, and not just once. That we scored three goals shows how much we were in the game. Unfortunately in the end we lacked the resolve to somehow just clear it at the back. Otherwise we could definitely have taken something with us. We have to get better at this collectively."
