FC Bayern to face Al Ahly SC in FIFA Club World Cup semi-finals

FC Bayern will face Al Ahly SC of Egypt in the semi-finals of the FIFA Club World Cup. The CAF Champions League winners beat Al-Duhail SC, champions of the host country Qatar, 1-0 in the quarter-finals on Thursday evening. Hussein El Shahat scored the golden goal for the Egyptians in the 30th minute. The semi-final clash between FCB and Al Ahly SC will take place at the Ahmed bin Ali Stadium on Monday 8 February at 19:00 CET (21:00 local).

Perennial Egyptian champions, CAF Champions League record winners

Al Ahly SC are Egypt's record champions with a staggering 42 titles, the last five of which were consecutive wins. They've also won 37 domestic cups. With nine CAF Champions League triumphs, the team from Cairo are also the record champions in Africa's continental club competition. In the 2019/20 season, Al Ahly celebrated the treble of domestic championship and cup, as well as the Champions League for the third time in the club's history - a world record that no other team has been able to emulate.

At the end of November, Al Ahly SC celebrated their ninth CAF Champions League title thanks to a 2-1 win over Al Zamalek SC in the final.

FC Bayern's semi-final opponents are coached by South African Pitso Mosimane. The top scorer this season is striker Kahraba, who has bagged five goals in ten games. Other well-known players are Egypt goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy and Tunisian defender Ali Maâloul, who is the only nominee for the "North African Player of the Year" award presented by "France Football" who doesn't ply his trade in one of the top European leagues.

Unbeaten in 32 competitive matches

The Egyptians, who are participating in the Club World Cup for the sixth time (best result: 3rd place in 2006), will go into Monday's match against FC Bayern with a great deal of self-confidence. Al Ahly are now unbeaten in 32 competitive matches. In the domestic league, the record champions are currently in second place, but have also played one game less than leaders Al Zamalek SC. In the CAF Champions League, Al Ahly have already qualified for the competition proper.
