Thanks to a strong performance, FC Bayern were able to celebrate a deserved 3-1 away win at Werder Bremen on Saturday. "We did what we set out to do, to have good positioning on the pitch and put our opponents under pressure," said FCB coach Hansi Flick. To find out more about what made the difference, read the reaction from players and coaches from both sides.
Reaction from the Bayern camp
Hansi Flick: "It was a routine victory and more than deserved, and it could have been by more. We did what we set out to do, to have good positioning on the pitch and put our opponents under pressure. I'm particularly pleased that we took the lead through a corner, Toni Tapalović and Miroslav Klose came up with something. Thanks again and congratulations to them for their work. Of course, the goal we conceded annoyed me. But our back four and the team as a whole did very well defensively, we hardly allowed any chances. I'm very happy with the result, congratulations to the team."
Thomas Müller: "We had the task of winning here, and we did that. This is another step for us. We're satisfied, also with the way we won. Of course, we have to keep at it, though. With our perseverance and flexibility, we deserved to win today. From the tenth minute, I saw that we were a bit fresher. We were more active. In the second half, we were in control of the game and played threatening football time and time again. We certainly should have scored more goals. As such, the victory is absolutely okay, even if we conceded a goal. We can handle that today."
Leon Goretzka: "It was a convincing performance. It's not easy in Bremen, where we've struggled in recent years. Our opponents sat very deep, so of course a goal from a set-piece did us good. Our shape was good in possession, which allowed us to stop counterattacks very well, except for their goal to make it 3-1, which annoys us a lot, because we wanted to keep a clean sheet."
Reaction from the Bremen camp
Florian Kohfeldt (Werder Bremen head coach): "It was a deserved defeat against strong and very well-focused opponents. We tried to play bravely out from the back against Bayern's very strong pressing game. The goal we conceded from a corner is of course very annoying. In the second half, we tried to open things up, but Bayern then had a number of chances. We deserved to lose. We were close to our mental maximum, but we failed against extremely good opponents."
Kevin Möhwald (Werder Bremen): "We played out from the back quite well in parts. Bayern put in a great performance and created a lot of opportunities. In the end, we should have created a few more chances. The gaps were definitely there. We have to take stock of that ourselves, but overall we played pretty well. Bayern were just very strong today."
Ömer Toprak (Werder Bremen): "If you want to beat Bayern, you need to have a superb day. Today wasn't it, it was just an okay day. Bayern played very, very well. Of course it's frustrating conceding the first from a corner. That played right into the Bayern's hands. They let us run after the ball, we didn't get into the head-to-heads. Then it's 2-0 and it's always going to be very difficult from there."
