How Robert Lewandowski is preparing for his comeback

Robert Lewandowski’s time of suffering is drawing to a close. Four weeks after picking up a knee injury in Poland’s FIFA World Cup qualifier win over Andorra, the Bayern striker is now on the verge of his comeback. “I’m doing very well. I’ve been training a few days now and everything’s going as planned. That means I’m happy and the plan is for me to play again at the weekend,” Lewandowski said in an interview with fcbayern.com.

Flick pleased with Lewandowski‘s progress

Lewandowski had to take almost 14 days off after his injury before he began running training again about a week ago. Since then, the 31-year-old has steadily increased his workload, and four days later the Poland captain was training with the ball again for the first time. “Lewandowski is making an excellent impression, but the Leverkusen game may come too soon. We hope he’ll be involved on Saturday,“ head coach Hansi Flick said before Tuesday evening’s game against Bayer Leverkusen.

Gerd Müller’s 40-goal record in sight

Four days after beginning his running training, Lewandowski was back working with the ball again.

The striker could therefore be back in action at the weekend away at Mainz and looking to continue his outstanding performances so far. Lewandowski is the runaway leader in the Bundesliga scoring chart with 35 goals in 2020/21 and still has a chance to break Gerd Müller’s historic record of 40 goals in a single season from 1971/72. “I don’t know whether I can do that, but I hope when I’m back out there that I can show my level from the first minute and score goals straightaway,” Lewandowski said.
