It was a crushing moment. In the 81st minute of the EURO 2020 round of 16 showdown between England and Germany, many fans were already screaming in celebration. Thomas Müller ran clear on the English goal and had the big chance to make it 1-1, but the Bayern attacker shot narrowly wide of the target from 16 metres. In the end, Germany lost 2-0 and were knocked out of the tournament.
On Wednesday morning, Müller expressed his thoughts in a moving Instagram post: “That was it, that one moment that sticks in your mind and keeps you awake at night. The kind of moment you work for, train for, live for. The moment where it falls on you to get your team back on level terms in a tight knockout game and send an entire football nation into ecstasy. To have this opportunity and then waste it hurts like hell. I’m hurting for the whole team, my teammates and our coach, who all put their trust in me to be there and deliver at exactly that moment. But most of all, it hurts because of all the Germany fans out there who stood by us and supported us throughout this European Championship, despite the difficult circumstances. Thank you for your support.”
Fans reacted with encouragement and comfort. “Chin up” and “You’re an incredible footballer with passion and heart” were among the many comments. Müller can continue to rely on the support of the fans, who he’ll bring joy to again soon.
