A new chapter began for Dayot Upamecano on Monday. The 22-year-old was able to get going at FC Bayern just in time for the start of preparations for next season. After the medical tests and performance diagnostics on the first two days, the newcomer went out onto the pitch at the Säbener Straße for the first time on Wednesday.
"My first days were great. I'm very happy to be here now," said Upamecano. "FC Bayern is a big club with world-class players. I want to play as much as possible and I'll give everything." In the first few sessions the Frenchman made a very good impression, invested the maximum effort and was a big presence on the pitch. "I'm fast and aggressive, I always give 100%, no matter what," said Upamecano.
CEO Kahn convinced by Upamecano
In a press conference on Monday, CEO Oliver Kahn described how FC Bayern are building on Upamecano's qualities, now defensive players David Alaba, Jérôme Boateng and Javi Martínez have left: "Of course we expect him to perform as well as he did at Leipzig. We've observed him for a few years and we're convinced he can help us with his quality - his strength in challenges, his build-up play, his technique."
Upamecano already knows the new coach at Bayern very well. The defender worked with Julian Nagelsmann for two years at RB Leipzig. "He's a great coach, encourages both old and young players and talks to everyone. I"m happy he's here and I hope we'll win a lot of games together," said Upamecano. Nagelsmann is also looking forward to continuing to work with Upa: "I know what his strengths are and what he still has to work on. I'm absolutely confident that he'll play."
Upamecano extends the French connection at FC Bayern
The 1.86m tall defender extends the French connection in Munich (currently eight French players). "It's cool that a lot of French players are here. I know some guys from the national team," said Upamecano. Together with his compatriots, the two-time Austrian champion (2016 & 2017) and U17 European champion from 2015 at wants to win the title at FC Bayern: "I want to help the team and I'll give everything so we can win many games."
