It was a moment when emotion just burst out of him. His shot from the right was hard, precise and bulged the left-hand corner. Serge Gnabry clenched his fist and shouted out in joy before his team-mates rushed up and bunched round him to celebrate.
2 goals against his favourite opponents
The goal to make it 3-2 in the 71st minute for FC Bayern München against 1. FC Köln, Gnabry's second goal on this Sunday afternoon, brought the much-anticipated home victory at the Allianz Arena after a true rollercoaster ride of emotions. It was Gnabry's eighth brace in the Bundesliga - and his fourth against the men from Cologne. He seems to have finally found his favourite opponent.
"I didn’t realise that," admitted the 26-year-old attacker on "DAZN", adding with a smile: "The opponents seem to suit me somehow." His powerful shot was not just a goal. It was a mark of desire. In a similar situation in the Supercup against Borussia Dortmund he opted to pass, but this time he grabbed the game by the scruff of its neck and went for the strike himself.
Praise from the head coach
There was praise from coach Julian Nagelsmann after the game: "Serge had an unbelievably good finish and he’s already scored a lot of goals this way in training. So it's good he trusted himself and showed off his shooting technique."
Finishing is his "superpower". Gnabry can play with both feet and create danger on both wings, so is difficult to control for any defender.
Nevertheless, he is of course also aware that he and the entire team now have to work on themselves in order not to get into such threatening situations as they did against Köln. With the teams all-square at the break, only willpower and Gnabry's class ultimately secured the three points.
Continue to work to become even better
As far as improvements are concerned, however, Gnabry is optimistic about the future. "Working with Julian is a lot of fun. We're learning a lot and hopefully we'll improve even more."
His class will certainly help towards achieving that goal.
Thanks in part to Gnabry's scoring prowess, Bayern set a new record in Europe's top tier:
