The best atmosphere in the Allianz Arena: FC Bayern's commanding 5-0 victory over Dynamo Kyiv in their home opener in the UCL put the coach, the players and the fans in a great mood. "It was a great evening of football with a superb atmosphere here in the stadium," said midfielder Leon Goretzka, delighted with an all-round successful game.
Crucial for the successful Champions League evening in front of 25,000 fans was the attitude of the players. "In the phases when the game could have tipped either way, we stepped up a gear," praised coach Julian Nagelsmann. Here's the reaction after the game.
Reaction from the Bayern camp:
Julian Nagelsmann: "I'm satisfied with long stretches of the game. It's never easy to keep your concentration high when you take an early lead and are head and shoulders above the other team. But we managed to do that for long stretches. Of course, our opponents had one or two good moments but didn't capitalise. But overall, we had a very good balance and defended decently. In phases where the game could have tipped either way, we stepped up a gear and scored some nice goals. It's about having the avarice when the team goes forward, and the hunger to not concede at the back. It always looks nicer when you keep a clean sheet."
Leon Goretzka: "It was a great evening of football with a supberb atmosphere here in the stadium. We played well. There are always things you can do better. But today many things were good, including the fact that we didn't concede. For us as a team and for the coach, it's very, very important that we don't stop, even when it's 3-0 or 4-0. We led early on. But then to have the mentality to want to score more goals and also to defend resolutely, we did that very well."
Leroy Sané: "We did relatively well. But Kyiv also showed they can play good football. We tried to play calmly. We managed to do that well a few times, especially at the back. In the end, our dominance showed. Defensively, we gave away very little today. I'm happy that things are going so well right now."
Reaction from the Kyiv camp:
Mircea Lucescu (Dynamo Kyiv head coach): "The result reflects exactly what you saw on the pitch today. Bayern Munich are the major favourites to win the Champions League. But three or four goals that we conceded were just our mistakes because we didn't hold our line. We played well for the first ten minutes, Bayern had no chances. But after the penalty it was very difficult. We tried to transition through the thirds well today. But unfortunately we lacked the last pass. That's why we couldn't create any chances. I can only repeat: Bayern are simply too strong for us."
