Bayern showed the perfect reaction to the 5-0 DFB Cup defeat away at Borussia Mönchengladbach with a 5-2 win away at Union Berlin in the Bundesliga. fcbayern.com rounds up the reaction to the game.
Reaction to the game
Dino Toppmöller: “We’re pleased we showed the desired reaction. We played against a team who are very strong at home. We totally controlled the game in the first half and deservedly led. We invited the opposition to get a goal back to 3-1 shortly before half-time. We knew they’d really come at us in the second half. Union are a very good team. We had a bit of luck that Manu was able to make a save in the period where Union were in the ascendency. But then we scored a super goal to get out of that through King. Union then came back at 4-2, but we again showed a reaction. I think we can be pleased with the performance.”
Manuel Neuer: “It was very important for us that we had the next game three days after the cup elimination to make up for that. We’re glad we scored a lot of goals and deservedly won the game. Starting like that was what we wanted. The annoying thing was the two goals we conceded, but we’re pleased we showed another side to ourselves.”
Thomas Müller: “We wanted to and had to show a reaction on the pitch. You never know what you’re going to end up with in terms of result here in this stadium, against this tight-knit team. It was important that we got stuck into duels, took on responsibility and wanted the ball so we could develop that enjoyment of playing. We were dominant in the first half hour and got the goals. We were very happy with that. Then we saw a typical Union side, never giving up and fighting back. They got it back to 3-1 before the break. We weren’t as calm in our play after the break, but we found the right answers with the goals. We won and in the end played a convincing game.”
Robert Lewandowski: “We showed from the first minute that we’re here to win. The first goal was important. It’s never easy to play away at Union. It’s always a fervent atmosphere. We also made mistakes, but still leave with three points. Now we can turn out focus to Tuesday.”
Kingsley Coman: “I feel very good, we played well. It was very important after the Gladbach game to perform like this.”
Opposition reaction
Urs Fischer (Union Berlin head coach): “Congratulations to Bayern, it’s a deserved win. We weren’t really there in the first half, didn’t play how we wanted to. We didn’t stress Bayern. When they get space, you could clearly see their quality today. We had hope after getting a goal back. In the second half I saw the real Union, we were closer to making it 3-2. But then came that great goal from Coman. But the team again showed mentality and passion and got it back to 4-2. Things were then done at 5-2.”
Paul Jaeckel (Union Berlin): “We’d expected them to want to make up for the last week. It was unfortunate we went behind through a penalty for handball. That played right into Bayern’s hands.”
