FC Bayern to face Salzburg in UCL round of 16

Reunion with Salzburg! FC Bayern will meet the Austrian champions in the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League. Last season, the German record champions already crossed paths with RB, who have made it to the round of 16 for the first time.

It's RB Salzburg!:

Rematch of last year's encounter

In last year's group stage, the two teams, whose stadiums are just 111 kilometres apart as the crow flies, met for the first time ever in a competitive match. Hansi Flick's team won the away match 6-2 with a spectacular performance, before triumphing 3-1 in the return leg at the Allianz Arena. In the end, the men from Munich qualified for the last 16 as group winners with 16 points, Salzburg finished third with four points and were later eliminated in the Europa League round of 16 against Villarreal.

Last season, the Munich side won both games against the Austrians (6-2; 3-1).

Salzburg qualify after tight win

FC Salzburg booked their place in the last 16 with a 1-0 home win over Sevilla in their final group match, which lifted the Austrians into second in the group behind OSC Lille and ahead of the Spaniards. German side VfL Wolfsburg were eliminated from the group in last place. The twelve-time Austrian champions currently lead the domestic Bundesliga table by 14 points ahead of Sturm Graz. Striker Karim Adeyemi, who played at youth level for FC Bayern, is the top scorer with 14 goals and has also netted three times in the Champions League. His German coach Jaissle (33) played professional football at Hoffenheim and is currently the youngest coach in the Champions League. His counterpart Nagelsmann is just 257 days older.

No away goals rule

The round of 16 has a new feature this season: For the first time, the so-called "away goals rule" will no longer apply - so in the event of a match being level after 180 minutes, the second leg will definitely go into extra time and, if necessary, to penalties.

The round of 16 first leg matches will be played on 15/16/22/23 February 2022, the second legs on 8/9/15/16 March. Both the quarter-finals and semi-finals will then be drawn on 18 March. The final will take place on 28 May 2022 at the Gazprom Arena in St Petersburg.
