Müller: We just didn't have luck on our side today

"We were actually closer to winning than Gladbach were," coach Julian Nagelsmann said, annoyed after a narrow defeat to Borussia Mönchengladbach. Despite numerous chances and Bayern's superiority, especially in the second half, the Reds were narrowly beaten 2-1 as the second half of the season kicked off. The frustration was also clearly evident amongst the players. Thomas Müller encapsulated it: "There was more for us in the game." Reaction here:

Reaction from the Bayern camp:

Julian Nagelsmann: "We were actually closer to winning than Gladbach were. Defeats are never nice. Considering the situation, we did very well in the first 25 minutes, we should have been up by more. The way we conceded the equaliser was complete madness, I don't know why we wanted to do that in the box like that, and then we conceded from another set-piece. In the second half we played decently and had lots of chances. Unlike in the cup game, we didn't deserve to lose today."

Thomas Müller: "Overall, luck was just not on our side today. There was more to be had in the game. The first half was a bit strange. I think we had the game completely under control for 25 minutes. Then we conceded the equaliser out of nowhere, and towards the end we faded and gave the ball away too often. We were a bit too passive at the back. In the second half, we felt like we were only playing to score once. Despite losing the ball a lot, we created a lot of chances and hit the woodwork three times."

Serge Gnabry: "We deserved a point. The equaliser came from nowhere, that threw us a bit. In the second half we kept up the pressure but unfortunately couldn't score another goal."

Sven Ulreich: "We imagined it differently, even though we played in a formation we've not played in so much. We still wanted to take all three points here. In many situations we did well. But for 20 minutes in the first half we weren't concentrating enough and then we let in the goals. That's how we allowed Gladbach to come back into the game."

Reaction from the Gladbach camp:

Adi Hütter (Borussia Mönchengladbach head coach): "Huge compliments to the team for coming back like that and getting the win in Munich. When the intensity is high, you have a good chance of winning, and that's what we showed today. Of course Bayern could have equalised. But my team played well. They implemented what we trained."

Yann Sommer (Borussia Mönchengladbach goalkeeper): "I'm very happy that we started the second half of the season like this, that was enormously important for us in our situation. We didn't start the game so well, but when we equalised, we also took control. That was good."

Christoph Kramer (Borussia Mönchengladbach midfielder): "In the first half we occupied space well. Then we made a lot of wrong decisions in the second half and gave the ball away, but they didn't capitalise."
