The incredible development of Kingsley Coman
Kingsley Coman has extended his contract with FC Bayern until 2027. The winger has played for the German record champions for six and a half years. fcbayern.com looks back at the development of the Frenchman in the FCB jersey.
On loan to Bayern
The Kingsley Coman chapter began at Bayern at the end of August 2015. The record champions signed the then 19-year-old wing wizard for two years on loan from Juventus. The fast and technically gifted Coman was considered one of the greatest talents in European football at the time.
Successful start in Munich
Coman became an important player in his first year at Bayern, making 35 appearances for the Munich side. The wide player shone in providing assists (12 in total), especially in the Champions League where he set up six goals. In the second leg of the last 16 tie against his parent club Juventus, Coman played a key role in an unforgettable comeback for FCB. Brought on when Bayern were 2-0 down, he set up the equalising goal scored by Thomas Müller to make it 2-2. Then in extra time, Coman wrapped things up with the goal to make it 4-2 in the 110th minute.
Coman's strong performances for Bayern were not lost on French national coach Didier Deschamps. The then 19-year-old made his debut for the senior national team in a friendly against Germany on 13 November 13. In the summer of 2016, Coman featured in the European Championship in his own country, where France lost to Portugal in the final.
Coman's first season at FC Bayern was crowned with a double. After winning the Bundesliga title, FCB also secured the DFB Cup with a 4-3 penalty shootout victory against Borussia Dortmund.
FCB sign Coman permanently
In April 2017, Bayern exercised their option to buy Coman and signed the winger on a contract until 2020. Six months later, this was extended to 2023.
Continuing a crazy run
In 2017 and 2018, Bayern convincingly defended the Bundesliga title and Coman continued his incredible streak: since he turned professional at Paris Saint-Germain in 2013, he has won the national championship every year with his respective club. Coman now has nine domestic league titles to his name (6 with Bayern, 2 with PSG, 1 with Juventus).
Slowed down by injuries
In 2018 in particular, Coman struggled with injury-related setbacks. Twice within a few months he tore a syndesmotic ligament in his left ankle and had to undergo surgery. He was missing for much of the year and also missed the World Cup, won by Les Bleus.
Crucial in 2019 double triumph
But Coman fought his way back and became a first-team regular in Munich again. In the 2018/19 season finale, he made an important contribution to winning his second double with FCB. On a dramatic last matchday against Eintracht Frankfurt, the attacker set Bayern on the winning road with an early goal for 1-0. In the cup final against RB Leipzig, he scored the goal to make it 2-0. His first touch before the strike was particularly special.
King crowns Bayern as Europe's champions
The footsteps that Coman followed after the departure of Franck Ribéry and Arjen Robben in summer 2019 were huge, but the Frenchman showed he was up to the challenge. Coman made a big contribution to the most successful season in the club's history. After successes in the league and cup, the King ensured victory in the final of the Champions League with his match-winning headed goal against boyhood club Paris Saint-Germain.
Important building block in the Bayern game
Coman delights the FC Bayern fans with his unbelievable acceleration, nimble dribbles and dangerous finishes. Last season he set a new personal record with a total of 24 goal involvements, and once again this term the winger is shining as an important pillar in the FCB side. Fans of the record champions can look forward to many more unforgettable moments with Kingsley Coman after his contract extension.
