FC Bayern ran out comfortable winners over 1. FC Union Berlin on Saturday evening. “It was a deserved win,“ commented Joshua Kimmich after the 4-0 triumph, although he did admit that the Munich men “dropped off a little at times”, particularly in the first half. But all in all, Bayern signed off for the international break with a strong performance, which also pleased the coach. “I’m certainly pleased with the result,” said Julian Nagelsmann. fcbayern.com rounds up the reaction:
Reaction from the Bayern camp
Julian Nagelsmann: “I’m certainly pleased with the result. You have to take it as it is. We gave away two big chances in the first half where Manu made two great saves. That happens when you defend so high. Our defenders were brilliant. Nianzou scored a goal. We also had the rub of the green in crucial moments today, which we didn’t have against Leverkusen and Hoffenheim. The fourth goal ended the game. The victory was deserved, but not the margin.“
Joshua Kimmich: “In the first half we dropped off a little at times, which was unnecessary. It was a deserved win, though. You could tell that the attitude and approach were right. The contest was settled in the first half. Then we added another in the second half. Perhaps 4-1 would’ve also been a fair result.“
Kingsley Coman: “We played very well. We combined well, not just in defence but also in attack. We worked well and created a lot of chances. We’re very happy to be playing in front of big crowds again. Last week we dropped points, so we were determined to win today to extend the lead.”
Reaction from the opposition camp
Urs Fischer (1. FC Union Berlin coach): “Congratulations to FC Bayern on a deserved win, although perhaps the scoreline flatters slightly. We actually did pretty well in the first half but we invited them to score. We had several opportunities but didn’t score. We had a lot of intentions after half-time but then straight away it’s 4-0. We tried everything after that but we have to look at ourselves, especially because of the first half. The team are learning that we’re not as good as Bayern yet.”
Rani Khedira (1. FC Union Berlin): “We were well in the game in the first half, we were audacious, brave and had chances. But then we gave away three gifts and it became hard. We wanted to go in at half-time at 2-0 and gather ourselves, but then it went as badly as it could’ve done.”
