Nagelsmann: Defensively not sharp enough

A week after winning the Bundesliga title with games to spare, FC Bayern suffered their fifth defeat of the season away at 1. FSV Mainz 05 on Saturday (3-1). "Defensively, we were not sharp enough to stop their chances," head coach Julian Nagelsmann said, summing up the game. Here's reaction from the Mainz game from both sides.

Reaction from the Bayern camp:

Julian Nagelsmann: "Mainz did well, created many chances and deserved to win. I think we always need a certain basic level of desire in a game. We didn't have that today. That's a bit human when you've just won the league. But nevertheless, we still wear the Bayern crest on our chests. We'll review the defeat. Actually, we had a good structure with the ball and could have created more chances. Defensively, we weren't sharp enough to prevent their chances."

Joshua Kimmich: "The performance today should give us food for thought. Of course, we won the league last week. Nevertheless, this has happened to us far too often this season. We have to analyse this so that it doesn't happen again in the next two games and, in particular, next season."

Reaction from the Mainz camp:

Bo Svensson (Mainz head coach): "It was a very good performance. We got off to a good start, but didn't score from our big chances at first. But we kept going and deserved to lead 2-0. It's clear that Bayern are always capable of scoring a goal. In the second half, we had to survive a tricky phase, but we made it 3-1 at the right time. That was the key. All in all, it's a very well-deserved win."

Alexander Hack (Mainz): "We put a lot into it, had many chances. We showed the better character [of the two sides]."
