FC Bayern's preparations for the 2022/23 season are in full swing - and now, in the United States. On Tuesday morning local time, head coach Julian Nagelsmann ordered his squad to take to the turf in Washington for the first workout of the Audi Summer Tour 2022 at Audi Field, where the team will face D.C. United on Wednesday night (01:30 CEST).
Gnabry: It's always a cool experience
At 10.25 am local time, Serge Gnabry, who recently extended his contract until 2026, was the first player to step onto the pitch in sweltering 28 degree heat in Washington DC. The other players led by captain Manuel Neuer and Thomas Müller mostly emerged from the dressing room in long-sleeved shirts, but switched directly to the short-sleeved variant due to the high temperatures. And there was plenty of heat in the intense 106-minute session. "Due to the very high humidity, it was very exhausting, but good. Being in the USA is always a cool experience. We're now looking forward to our days here," said Gnabry after the morning training session. Defender Josip Stanišić added: "It's always something special to train in a stadium on another continent. The session was intense, also because of the heat."
The session in detail
After an extended face-to-face discussion with on-field leader Joshua Kimmich out on the pitch, Nagelsmann first supervised stabilisation and passing exercises before the group moved to various match situation drills. The coach tested different formations and the team played on alternating pitvh sizes. The 34-year-old coach was his usual voiciferous self and kept driving his team on.
At 12:11 pm local time, session number one on Tuesday was over, with a few players still battling away in a penalty shootout. The second team training session at Audi Field is scheduled for the afternoon, before which Nagelsmann and Alphonso Davies will discuss upcoming friendly opponents D.C. United at the press conference.
