FC Bayern’s Audi Summer Tour 2022 leaves Washington DC on Friday for Green Bay, Wisconsin. Here’s all you need to know on our second destination in the USA.
When it comes to the city of Green Bay in the state of Wisconsin in the northern United States, there’s one word that’s forever associated with it: Packers. The small city of 107,000 on the shores of Lake Michigan is most famous for its American football team, the Green Bay Packers.
Packers territory
Founded in 1919, the Packers have four Super Bowl victories and 13 league championships in total, making them one of the most successful franchises in the National Football League. Like Bayern, the Green and Gold are one of their sport’s biggest names. They are third for membership numbers in the NFL behind the Arizona Cardinals and the Chicago Bears. The particularly impressive thing is that star quarterback Aaron Rodger’s team is the only community-owned franchise in professional American sport. Their legendary stadium, Lambeau Field, where Bayern will take on Manchester City on 23 July, was opened in 1957, making it the oldest ground in the NFL.
On the shores of Lake Michigan
Green Bay is located in Brown County in the state of Wisconsin at the mouth of the Fox River on Lake Michigan. The nearest major cities are Milwaukee (about 140km/90 miles to the south and home of the NBA’s Milwaukee Bucks), Chicago (about 334km/210 miles to the south, where FCB legend Bastian Schweinsteiger ended his career with Chicago Fire) and the state capital of Madison (219km/136 miles to the southwest). The area is known for low temperatures in the winter (-20 degrees Celsius), but it can get hot in the summer. Temperatures over 30 degrees are not unusual at the end of July.
Need to know
Among the city’s best-known sites are the Cofrin Memorial Arboretum, the National Railroad Museum and the Neville Public Museum. As well as Curly Lambeau, the former American football player, coach and one of the founders of the Green Bay Packers, director Zack Snyder is one of Green Bay’s most famous faces.
