Sadio Mane left for Rabat, Morocco straight after Bayern’s 6-2 win over DC United during the club’s Audi Summer Tour to the USA. The forward has been nominated for Africa’s Player of the Year, having guided Senegal to the Africa Cup of Nations title in February. He’s the current holder of the award from when it was last bestowed in 2019.
FC Bayern CEO Oliver Kahn: “Sadio absolutely deserves to be named African Player of the Year for the second time after his historic Africa Cup of Nations success with Senegal. He’s been one of the world’s top stars for a number of years, and is an excellent ambassador for his country and our sport not just because of his performances. All of us at FC Bayern have our fingers crossed for Sadio for the award.”
Mane also scored and got an assist in the win in Washington before boarding his flight. He netted the winning penalty in the shootout victory over Egypt in Senegal’s famous victory in February, which he achieved alongside Bayern teammate Bouna Sarr. The 30-year-old will also be with the Lions of Teranga at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
