The winning streak continues and top spot regained, at least for one night! FC Bayern celebrated a decisive 6-2 win at home to 1. FSV Mainz 05 on Saturday. The three points saw FCB leapfrog to the top of the Bundesliga table, although Union Berlin can regain the lead with a win tomorrow against Borussia Mönchengladbach. "We achieved our goal for the day, we did our homework. We wanted to be top as soon as possible, and we are at least until tomorrow," said midfielder Leon Goretzka. "There's good energy on the pitch. It's fun to be out there with the boys," said Serge Gnabry, scorer of the opening goal, summarising Bayern's outstanding form of late.
Reaction from the Bayern camp:
Julian Nagelsmann: "Massive kudos to the team for what they're doing right now, the way they've carried themselves the past three days has been outstanding. We scored a lot of goals again and did so in a beautiful way. It's great fun to watch from the sidelines. We've got a good mix of quality and the right kind of attitude. It's truly great right now. It's nice when six different players score, it gives the players confidence. The guys who came in are doing very well, and that's what a team thrives on as well."
Leon Goretzka: "It was a well-deserved win. It feels great to score, you could see that in my face when I did. Our big goal was to get into a rhythm. You have to work hard for that, and that's what we did. Then the game's a little easier. We achieved our goal for the day, we'd done our homework. We wanted to be at the top of the table as soon as we could be, and we've done that today, where we'll be at least until tomorrow."
Serge Gnabry: "The whole week was very satisfying. We were excellent throughout the games we played. With the 6-2 win today, we go home happy. Our togetherness is crucial. There's a good energy on the pitch. It's fun to be out there with the boys. Everyone helps each other out, that's how that energy comes about and it makes it easier for everyone to perform well."
Reaction from the FSV Mainz 05 camp:
Martin Schmidt (1. FSV Mainz 05 sporting director): "It was a heavy defeat. Defensively, we were not good, especially out wide where we let ourselves get caught off guard. We defended too passively and often didn't close down that extra yard out wide. We had a lot of chances, but we conceded six goals - we deserved to lose."
Bo Svensson (1. FSV Mainz 05 head coach): "Congratulations to Bayern for a well-earned win. They deserved to win by that much too. In the first half we were tidy in parts, in the second half we were lacking across the board."
Silvan Widmer (1. FSV Mainz 05 captain): "That was not a good performance from us. We scored two goals. But we defended very badly as a team and made it too easy for Bayern to create chances. We didn't have enough bite and spirit."
