The ninth edition of the FC Bayern Youth Cup was another great success. This year’s tournament took place on Saturday, 15 October, and for the first time at the Olympiastadion in Munich. The competition was held in cooperation with Volkswagen, FC Bayern’s youth partner.
Nigeria clean up
Team Nigeria lifted the title with a 3-1 win in the final against Team Japan. All three individual awards also went to Nigerian players. Victor Ikechukwu Jonathan Orakpo was named the best player by Bayern Legends Klaus Augenthaler and Hans Pflüger. Abdulgaffar Abubakar was the best goalkeeper, while Abdulfatar Omale was the top scorer with six goals. Orakpo will now get the chance to take part in the third edition of the FC Bayern World Squad and take a step closer to professional football. Argentina finished in third place.
Preparations for the tournament
All the teams got to train at Säbener Straße on Thursday before getting to know each other in the evening with an intercultural gathering. Friendly matches were arranged at the FC Bayern training ground the following morning before a group tour of the Olympic Park, including the Olympiastadion, in the afternoon.
After the Youth Cup on Saturday, a team consisting of the best players was put together to take on the Bayern U15s at the Campus on Sunday, winning 3-0. Every participant in the Youth Cup then got to go to the Allianz Arena on Sunday evening and watch Bayern’s 5-0 win over Freiburg. This year’s edition of the FC Bayern Youth Cup once again showed how youth players from around the world can be promoted and how important exchange with other countries is.
