Thomas Müller has been awarded the Personal Prize of the Bavarian Minister-President for his outstanding services as part of the 2022 Bavarian Sports Award. The FC Bayern forward received the trophy from Minister-President Markus Söder during a visit to Säbener Straße. The Bavaria native had set a record this summer by winning an 11th Bundesliga title - no other player in the history of German football has lifted the trophy so many times.
Söder: "A sports prize for a great hero"
Markus Söder: "A sports award for a great hero. Thomas Müller is one of the greatest footballers in history – a top performer, confident, and always cool and likeable. He’s a figure of identification for Bavaria all over the world. Thomas Müller has a huge fan base and motivates younger people to play sport. His huge success with FC Bayern and the national team speak for themselves. Bavaria is very proud. I’m very excited to see what other titles we can look forward to."
Thomas Müller: "It’s a great honour that I’ve been awarded the Bavarian Sports Award. Bavaria is my home, in terms of football as well as my whole life, so of course I’m particularly pleased to receive this award. I want to make people have fun and I give my all every day - although I also have to say that in football you never win alone, we can only inspire people as a team. So thank you to my colleagues as well, and I hope that this title won't be the last one this season."
Making the positive impact of sport visible in society
Every year, the Bavarian Sports Award honours people and initiatives that make the positive impact of sport in society visible in a special way and shape sporting life in an imaginative way. The award has been presented in various categories since 2002. The first recipient of the Personal Award of the Bavarian Minister-President was current CEO Oliver Kahn. The Bavarian Sports Award ceremony will take place on Saturday in Munich.
Müller was already awarded the Bavarian Order of Merit back in 2019:
