Noussair Mazraoui has made history as part of the first Morocco team ever to reach the quarter-finals of the World Cup after the Atlas Lions beat Spain 3-0 on penalties in the round of 16 on Tuesday. The Bayern full-back started the game for the North Africans and came off after 82 minutes.
Fourth African team in last eight
After 120 thrilling but goalless minutes, the game had to be settled on penalties. Pablo Sarabia struck the post with the first Spanish effort before goalkeeper Bono then saved the next two attempts, while Morocco scored three of their spot-kicks, to become only the fourth African country after Ghana in 2010, Senegal in 2002 and Cameroon in 1990 to reach the World Cup quarter-finals. Mazraoui & Co. will now take on Portugal on Saturday.
