FC Bayern returned to the Bundesliga summit thanks to a dominant 3-0 home win over title rivals Union Berlin on Sunday. "It was a very important victory and a benchmark," said head coach Julian Nagelsmann after the defending champions moved three points clear of the capital club. "We weren't top at kick-off, so had to do something about that," added Thomas Müller. "We were always on the move and aggressive in the tackle. It was a good game." fcbayern.com rounds up the reaction...
Reaction to the Union win
Julian Nagelsmann: "It was a really important victory and a benchmark. We were dominant in all areas. We had 10-12 big chances and gave little away. Union are not a team that give you many chances - that in itself makes it a good performance from us. We trained well and talked a lot. We wanted to show what we expect of ourselves. We played very well today."
Thomas Müller: "We were really lively - for example, the way we managed to break free in attack. We need to be active like that. We were always on the move and aggressive in the tackle. For me, it was a lot of fun to be so involved in such moments. It was a good game. We weren't top at kick-off, so had to do something about that. It was a good step but counts for nothing next week. We have to deliver again. I'm happy we made that step. You have to play that way against Union. It was the first small step towards the kind of football we want to play."
Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting: "I'm delighted with the team's performance and to have scored against such a strong side. We haven't picked up enough points this year - we could have played better. We wanted to show the real us again today. We did that from the get-go. We had chances and might have scored one or two more. It was a Bayern-like display. We're really happy with the win, but we have the Champions League to come and have to keep our focus in the Bundesliga week in, week out. If we do that, we have the potential to have a lot of success."
Reaction from the Union camp
Urs Fischer (Union Berlin coach): "They were clear winners - two or three classes above. You have to admit that. I must say, we could've gone in at the break 1-0 down, but 3-0 is a fair result. The second and third goals annoyed me, especially the build-up. When you gift Bayern chances like that, they gobble them up."
Rani Khedira (Union Berlin): "You have to be really bold if you want to come away from Munich with anything. We just weren't in the first half and then there's no way back here. We're about defending from the front, but we were too passive and sat too deep in the first half. And when Bayern start motoring, they take advantage of that."
Robin Knoche (Union Berlin): "We had to do a lot of chasing, but we knew that beforehand. But when you win the ball, you have to use it better and make things happen. You can't give away goals like that. We didn't stand a chance today."
