The German record champions face another hard test on Wednesday as they conclude the Audi Summer Tour 2023 with a friendly against Liverpool (kick-off 13:30 CEST). Following the games against Manchester City and Kawasaki Frontale, there's a meeting with the 19-time English champions at the Singapore National Stadium. fcbayern.com runs the rule over Jürgen Klopp's side for you:
Historic club with domestic and European honours
When talking about the top teams in European club football, there's no getting past Liverpool Football Club. Since their formation on 3 June 1892, the Reds have always been among the strongest sides in England and boast 19 domestic league titles in their proud 131-year history. The trophy cabinet at the legendary Anfield, where the club has played its home game since its foundation, is supplemented with eight FA Cup successes and nine in the League Cup (EFL Cup). At European level, LFC have nine major honours to their name: six in the European Cup/Champions League and three in the UEFA Cup.
Successful era under Jürgen Klopp
Liverpool's successes in recent times are primarily associated with the name of German coach Jürgen Klopp. Since taking charge in 2015, the Stuttgart native has reestablished the Reds as one of the elite teams in European football, winning seven trophies in seven seasons to date. They include the Champions League triumph in 2019, the team's first success in Europe's premier club competition since the famous final against AC Milan in 2005. The 2-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur in the final also topped off the German's career after his Borussia Dortmund side lost to Bayern in the all-German final of 2013. He also led Liverpool to the Premier League title in 2020, ending a 30-year wait.
Change at Anfield
After securing the services of the likes of Uruguayan international striker Darwin Núñez and Dutchman Cody Gakpo last summer, Klopp has refreshed his squad in recent weeks with the signings of Argentinian World Cup winner Alexis MacAllister from league rivals Brighton & Hove Albion as well as Hungarian midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai from RB Leipzig. It's a time of transition for the Reds with long-serving stars James Milner, Roberto Firmino and captain Jordan Henderson leaving the club this summer, but the squad remains packed with big international names such as Virgil van Dijk und Mohamed Salah.
German-flavoured pre-season
The clash with Bayern is arguably the highlight of Liverpool's pre-season this year, although it's not their first appearance at the Singapore National Stadium. The Reds beat Leicester City comfortably 4-0 on Sunday at the same venue. Their remaining friendlies ahead of the 2023/24 campaign have all been or will be against German opponents, though. Klopp's men took on Bundesliga 2 teams Karlsruher SC (4-2) and SpVgg Greuther Fürth (4-4) during a training camp in Baden-Württemberg, and after the Singapore Trophy they warm up for the start of the season against Bundesliga newcomers SV Darmstadt 98 on 7 August.
