Then and now – Bayern aim high at Tegernsee

Looking back: Pre-season isn't always the most enjoyable time – that's just as true today as it was around 20 years ago at FC Bayern. It helps when you can distract yourself from the strains of training in the wonderful mountain setting of Tegernsee.

Bayern trained often in Rottach-Egern

Demichelis Tegernsee
Martín Demichelis was put through his paces at the 2004 training camp at Tegernsee.

Before the 2004/05 season, the German record champions made use of the magnificent conditions at FC Rottach-Egern to get themselves fit for the new campaign. Under then coach Felix Magath, who was well known for intense and exhausting sessions, Martín Demichelis and his teammates had to get through some punishing workouts. One anecdote proves just how much the Bayern players were pushed:

Linke: "Walk until someone says 'stop'"

"We met at the bus at 9:30 in the morning and started walking," reported Thomas Linke during the camp. However, the destination was initially kept secret. "We were just told: 'Now we walk until someone says 'stop' – unfortunately that was then at a mountain peak," continued the 2001 Champions League winner.

Bayern training camp Tegernsee
Just like they used to, Bayern are getting fit for the new season at Tegernsee.

The current generation of Bayern players are also currently preparing for the tasks ahead at Lake Tegernsee. And although the training methods have changed in recent years, the team will still have to sweat it out in a beautiful setting.
