FC Bayern paid tribute to the late Franz Beckenbauer with a number of actions in their home game against Hoffenheim at the Allianz Arena on Friday night. Among the most touching moments was when the players walked onto the field to the song ‘Gute Freunde’, which the Kaiser recorded in 1966, while there was a perfectly observed minute of silence to honour one of football’s greatest ever.
A banner of Beckenbauer adorned the centre circle before kick-off.
Both teams wore black armbands and Bayern were playing in special jerseys with the words ‘Danke Franz’ on the front. The shirts, as well as the warm-up and training gear, will be signed after the game and auctioned on the FC Bayern Online Store’s auction platform on 17 January. All the proceeds will go to the Franz Beckenbauer Foundation.
As has been the case throughout the week, the Allianz Arena was also illuminated with the message ‘Danke Franz’ for the Hoffenheim game.
A large memorial service for Beckenbauer will take place at the Allianz Arena on Friday, 19 January:
