Kingsley Coman missed Bayern’s final two games of 2023 due to a calf injury, but the Frenchman is fit as the team kick off the new year. Talking to fcbayern.com, Coman discusses the mid-season break, Saturday’s friendly against Basel and goals for the second half of the campaign.
Interview with Kingsley Coman
Servus, King! You were sidelined with a calf injury before Christmas but are now back in training again. How’s it going?
Coman: “I’m doing very well. I got back to Munich on 28 December to prepare for the start of training with individual sessions. Now I’m back fully with the team and feel good.”
How did you spend your days off?
“I used the time to train and get fit. I had a few days holiday with my family in Austria. We had a nice time together.”
What resolutions did you have for the new year?
“I always try to give my all to be a better person and a better player each day. So, I didn’t have any particular resolutions for the new year. I always want to remain hungry and be positive.”
How happy are you with the season so far?
“We frequently played very well in the first half of the season. Unfortunately, we lost the cup game against Saarbrücken and another in the Bundesliga. All in all, we’re well placed but know we still have to improve.”
You’ve been back in training for four days. How are things going ahead of the second half of the season?
“We’re looking good, working a lot and intensely in training. We’ve got good power. We’ve now got the one friendly match and then a week of training. I’m sure we’ll be ready to start.”
What things are you all working on before the restart next Friday against Hoffenheim?
“We’re working a lot on physical aspects, our intensity and pressing. We need to be prepared for the restart and then want to pick up where we left off before Christmas.”
What are the aims for the second half of the season?
“We’re still a few points behind Leverkusen in the Bundesliga. We want to win every game, then we don’t need to look at the other teams. In the Champions League, we want to go as far as possible. We’ve got Lazio in the last 16, need to take things one step at a time.”
You’ve got the friendly against Basel on Saturday before the return to competitive action. What are your expectations of the game?
“A match is always a match you want to win. Obviously, it’s not about the result in a friendly. We have a few things we want to work on. It’s about preparing in the optimal way for the first league game and getting into the groove so we can build on the wins we had before the winter break.”
