Kim in quarter-finals with South Korea, Mazraoui and Morocco eliminated

Bayern defenders Minjae Kim and Noussair Mazraoui were both involved in last-16 ties with their national teams at the continental championships on Tuesday. While Kim celebrated progression to the quarter-finals with South Korea at the Asian Cup, Mazraoui and Morocco were knocked out of the Africa Cup of Nations.

Kim and South Korea beat Saudi Arabia on penalties

The South Koreans came up against Saudi Arabia in the Asian Cup round of 16. After a goalless first half, Jürgen Klinsmann's side fell behind to an Abdullah Radif goal immediately after the restart. It looked like South Korea were heading out of the competition until late on, when Kim and Co threw everything forward and equalised in the ninth minute of stoppage time courtesy of Gue-sung Cho. The game then went to penalties and it was the Taegeuk Warriors who won 4-2. Kim started the match and came off in the 117th minute.

Morocco fall to South Africa

Full-back Mazraoui is heading back to Munich after being knocked out of the Africa Cup of Nations with the Moroccan national team. Having won their group, Morocco met South Africa in the last 16 on Tuesday. After falling behind in the 57th minute through Evidence Makgopa's goal, the Atlas Lions had the chance to equalise when they were awarded a penalty in the 85th minute, but Achraf Hakimi hit the bar. South Africa then sealed the 2-0 win in added time courtesy of Teboho Mokoena. Mazraoui, who didn't feature in the group stage due to injury, was named in the starting line-up and played 76 minutes.
