Minjae Kim and South Korea are into the semi-finals of the Asian Cup after Jürgen Klinsmann’s team claimed a thrilling 2-1 win over Australia in extra-time in the quarter-finals on Friday. Craig Goodwin had put the Socceroos ahead on 42 minutes, with South Korea on the verge of elimination until another equaliser deep into added time – as they had done in the last 16 against Saudi Arabia – to level things as Hee-chan Hwang converted a penalty in the 96th minute. Captain Heung-min Son then struck the decisive goal in the 104th minute as Kim, who played the entire 120 minutes, and the Taegeuk Warriors advanced to the final four.
Jordan on Tuesday, Kim suspended
South Korea will now face Jordan, who beat Tajikistan earlier in the day, in the semi-finals on Tuesday (16:00 CET). However, Kim will miss the game through suspension after picking up his second yellow card of the tournament. The sides met in the group stage with a 2-2 draw.
