FC Bayern commemorated Andreas Brehme before Saturday evening's Bundesliga home match against RB Leipzig. Both teams and the spectators held a minute's silence for the 1990 world champion, who passed away at the age of 63 this week. The teams also wore black armbands. "German football has lost one of its greatest legends. Andi Brehme will always be our 1990 world champion, and he was much more than the only goal in the World Cup final in Rome. He was always there for everyone, and he was a loyal friend," stadium announcer Stephan Lehmann said.
Andreas Brehme joined FC Bayern from 1. FC Kaiserslautern in the summer of 1986 and made 80 competitive appearances for the German record champions, scoring eight goals. He won the German championship, twice the Supercup and advanced to the European Cup Winners' Cup final in 1987 with Bayern. In 1988 he joined Inter Milan along with Lothar Matthäus. Brehme made history when he converted the penalty in Germany's 1-0 victory over Argentina in the World Cup final in Rome. He later played for Real Zaragoza and again 1. FC Kaiserslautern.
