His sudden death was a great shock, and now the funeral has taken place for Andreas Brehme, who died unexpectedly on 20 February at the age of 63. Among the 200 invited guests at the memorial service, the FC Bayern family was represented by supervisory board members Uli Hoeneß and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen, long-serving former board member and president Karl Hopfner as well as vice-president Walter Mennekes, with several former teammates and legends also in attendance. A delegation from Inter Milan, where Brehme celebrated his greatest successes after moving from Munich to Serie A, travelled all the way from Milan. Rudi Völler gave a moving speech in honour of his long-time companion, with whom he won the 1990 World Cup.
Among others, ex-Bayern players Lothar Matthäus, Klaus Augenthaler, Jürgen Klinsmann, Raimond Aumann, Hansi Pflügler, Olaf Thon, Stefan Reuter, Thomas Berthold and Michael Ballack also said farewell to Brehme, as did Völler's former Germany teammates Guido Buchwald, Pierre Littbarski, Hans-Peter Briegel, Andreas Köpke, Karl-Heinz Riedle and Hansi Müller. Also present were Bernd Neuendorf, president of the German Football Association (DFB), long-time team doctor Hans-Wilhelm Müller-Wohlfahrt, former DFB president Wolfgang Niersbach, swimming icon Franziska van Almsick and Heidi Beckenbauer, widow of Franz Beckenbauer, who died in January. From Milan, former players Giuseppe Bergomi, Nicola Berti, Aldo Serena and Alessandro Bianchi were among those who came.
