Despite a strong performance, the Bavarians were unable to progress against Real. A place in the final at Wembley was within their grasp in the second leg at the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu, and it took two late goals from Madrid right at the end of the game to seal a 2-1 defeat. The disappointment was written all over the players' faces afterwards - but they had nothing to be ashamed of. Bayern had given their all, but it just wasn't meant to be.
Thank you to the fans in the stadium and around the world
This was also recognised by the fans, who had given FCB their unconditional support throughout the campaign. Following the final whistle in Madrid, Bayern thanked their supporters in the stadium. The team's applause was not just for the fans who had travelled with them - it was representative of the huge support FC Bayern had received globally during their Champions League journey.
