Herbert Hainer and Mayor Hermann Nafziger unveil the commemorative plaque at Kurt Landauer's birthplace

Herbert Hainer at 140th birthday event

A great honour for Kurt Landauer, long-serving president of FC Bayern: to mark what would have been his 140th birthday on Sunday, a commemorative plaque was unveiled at the house where he was born in Planegg near Munich. The event was initiated by the Kurt Landauer Stiftung eV. President Herbert Hainer and the mayor of Planegg, Hermann Nafziger, unveiled the plaque in front of around 50 guests.

"We're delighted that the Kurt Landauer Foundation has organised this commemorative plaque," said Hainer. "Kurt Landauer not only shaped FC Bayern, but he continues to inspire people today to reach out to one another and work towards a common future. He is without question one of the great personalities in our club's history."

Escape from the National Socialists

Kurt Landauer was born on 28 July 1884 in the house at Bahnhofstrasse 31. He joined FC Bayern in 1901 and remained loyal to his club until his death in Munich on 21 December 1961.

He played for the reserves and later became president of the Reds a total of four times, although he had to flee to Switzerland in 1939 to escape the terror of the National Socialists due to his Jewish roots. Following his return to Munich at the end of the war, he was re-elected to take over the helm again.

With him, the club celebrated its first German championship in 1932. Landauer established professional structures and, among other things, ensured that Säbener Straße became the home of the Reds after the war.

To this day, he is the longest-serving president in the club's history. His unifying effect overcame deep rifts. One of the most central statements of the honorary president is: "FC Bayern and me belong together and are inseparable from each other." The plaque is adorned with a portrait of Landauer and the German record champions' former logo.

The Kurt Landauer Foundation has produced the fifth issue of its magazine KURT! (in German only) to mark the unveiling of the commemorative plaque. You can find out more HERE.
