FCB defender Alphonso Davies and his Canadian compatriots celebrated after advancing to the Copa América semi-finals thanks to their 4-3 penalty shootout win over Venezuela. Canada take on Argentina in the early hours of Wednesday in the last four. Davies & Co. had fallen to a 2-0 defeat in their group match against Argentina.
Canada were dominant in the game against Venezuela, who had won all three of their group matches. Jacob Shaffelburg put Canada ahead after 12 minutes. Captain Davies and his teammates had more big chances, but Salomón Rondón levelled the scores from long distance after the hour mark.
There is no extra-time in the Copa América, except for the final, so the game went to penalties after the 90 minutes had ended in a 1-1 stalemate. Davies proved a cool customer and found the top right corner of the net from the spot, Canada celebrating a 4-3 win to advance to the last four.
