Thiago announces retirement – ‘It was an honour!’

Thiago Alcantara spent seven years as Bayern, winning every possible trophy and earning his place in the hearts of every fan thanks to his style of play and sincere manner. Now our former No.6 has announced his retirement from football in a statement on Monday evening.

Jan-Christian Dreesen, FC Bayern CEO: “Goodbye Thiago, it was an honour. Thiago was a defining part of our team for seven years, and it was with him that we last won the Champions League in 2020. Pep Guardiola once said: ‘Thiago or nothing’. After announcing his retirement, FC Bayern says: ‘Thiago can do everything’. Thank you very much for a wonderful time together. We wish you all the best for your future. A place in our Legends team will always be reserved.”

Thiago came to Munich from Barcelona in summer 2013. During his seven years at Bayern, he won seven Bundesliga titles, four DFB Cups (2014, 2016, 2019 and 2020), three Supercups (2016, 2017 and 2018), the FIFA Club World Cup (2013) and the Champions League (2020). He scored 31 goals and provided 35 assists in 235 competitive appearances before his 2020 move to Liverpool.
