Aston Villa were held to a 2-2 draw away at promoted Ipswich Town in the English Premier League four days before Bayern visit Villa Park in the Champions League. Unai Emery’s team remain unbeaten away from home this season, but their run of five straight wins in all competitions came to an end.
The visitors went behind after just eight minutes when Liam Delap picked out the bottom left corner for Ipswich. However, Villa turned things around inside the first half when Morgan Rogers intercepted the ball and played a one-two with Ollie Watkins before slotting home after a quarter of an hour. They then had the lead after the half-hour mark when Watkins headed in ex-Bayer Leverkusen man Leon Bailey’s cross.
The promoted side then pushed to restore parity again but failed to take a number of promising chances, with Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez producing saves against Kalvin Phillips and Delap. However, the hosts would have the final word when Delap beat Martinez for a second time to make it 2-2.
The result means Villa have 13 points after six games and sit fifth in the Premier League. They welcome Bayern to Villa Park for the second game of this year’s Champions League campaign on Wednesday.
