"The win was so big because we were greedy," said Thomas Müller, summing up the unforgettable 9-2 victory in the Champions League opener against Dinamo Zagreb. This motivation was evident in every situation for the Bayern players on Tuesday evening, as Joshua Kimmich also confirmed: "You could certainly tell that everyone was eager to score goals - but they weren't going crazy." Neither Müller nor Kimmich had their names on any of the nine goals, but both had a hand in several of them. Check out our analysis to find out who scored and how, and why this magical evening in Europe's premier club competition will never be forgotten.
1-0 from a Harry Kane penalty (19th minute)
Who else but striker Harry Kane could have kicked off this memorable Champions League evening? Our number nine converted his first penalty, a medium-height shot into the left corner. Kane kept his head up on the run-up, delayed briefly, saw Dinamo keeper Ivan Nevistić move towards the other corner and then struck the ball with unerring accuracy. The penalty was preceded by a foul on Aleksandar Pavlović, who was as composed in possession as always, after he had been cleverly set up from the left by-line by Jamal Musiala. Musiala's move was in turn preceded by an impressive lofted pass from a centre-forward who had dropped off - and who bears the name Kane on his CL jersey.
2-0 Raphaël Guerreiro - the goal of the night (33')
You have to admit it: None of Bayern's nine goals on this September evening should be singled out in particular, as the overall feeling in the Bayern camp after this exhilarating game was just too good. If you had to choose, Raphaël Guerreiro's strike would probably be the pick of the bunch. It was simply jaw-dropping. Similar to Kane before the 1-0, Serge Gnabry now delivered a cross into the centre from the left wing, cutting out the back line. The waiting Musiala demonstrated fantastic skill by flicking on the ball with his chest. And then - boom! Guerreiro let the ball bounce once before firing a screamer straight into the top corner. A wonder strike, with the Portuguese once again showing off his sublime touch to put his side on the road to victory.
3-0 Michael Olise - the artist with a good head on his shoulders (38')
It was a joy to watch Champions League debutant Michael Olise play football against the Croatians. He danced across the pitch with graceful movements, repeatedly darting inside from the right wing with his strong left foot. When he scored to make it 3-0, however, the skilled youngster demonstrated his centre-forward qualities: Musiala took a short corner kick on the left to Joshua Kimmich and ran past the Germany captain, drawing the defence's attention - but the latter zipped in a right-footed cross towards the penalty spot, where Olise headed in from five metres out. 3-0, and it was bedlam in the Allianz Arena!
4-2 Harry Kane - anticipation is key (57')
Fortunately, the Reds quickly found the right reaction after the visitors scored two quick goals after the break to make it 3-2. Kane scored his only goal from open play on CL Matchday 1: Following an extended period of Bayern possession, the ball ended up with Gnabry on the left wing, who passed to the centre. Davies failed to connect properly and the ball bounced out to Kimmich, who shot from distance with his slightly weaker left foot. Nevistić could only parry the dangerous attempt to his front, where Kane was waiting just where a centre-forward of his calibre should be, and he fired in the rebound to make it 4-2.
5-2 Michael Olise - precision passing from the attack (61')
A brace for Olise in his maiden Champions League game! The spectators in the stadium roared with delight once again - what a superb piece of play that was. Alphonso Davies played a high-risk vertical pass into the centre to Kane, who deftly flicked the ball into Musiala's path in front of goal. The dribbler displayed outstanding timing and laid the ball across to Olise just before Nevistić got a hand to it. But there was still one more hurdle to overcome: in the heat of the moment and with the speed of the attack, Musiala almost got in the way of Olise's shot on the empty goal - but the two attacking artists, who have known each other since playing at youth level in England, kept their cool and demonstrated their skill. 5-2!
6-2 from a Harry Kane penalty - again (73')
Cool, cooler, Harry Kane! His finishing quality from the spot is unrivalled. The England captain's second spot-kick also ended up in the back of the net - and again in the left corner. This time Kane didn't delay, but finished clinically with his fantastic shooting technique (his body is well over the ball when he takes the shot). The penalty was awarded following a corner from Kimmich and a header from substitute Eric Dier onto the arm of Josip Mišić. Kane thanked his British teammate.
7-2 from Harry Kane - yet another penalty (78')
The 31-year-old displayed this characteristic shooting stance again just five minutes later with the next penalty, even if he delayed again and waited for the keeper to move. "Three penalties in one game, I've never had that before," said the striker after the final whistle. "On the third, I didn't know what to do or where to shoot." But he didn't let it show, and once again the ball landed in the left-hand corner from Kane's perspective. Davies, who was very active in the second half, had previously been fouled after dribbling in the box.
8-2 from Leroy Sané - the left-footed piledriver is back (85')
A dream comeback from Leroy Sané! More than four months after his last competitive match for FC Bayern, our number ten scored in typical style 17 minutes after coming on as a substitute: Thomas Müller, who had also come off the bench, held the ball up on the edge of the box and played it to his compatriot, who cut inside from the right and finished with his powerful left foot from distance into the bottom left-hand corner. Welcome back, Leroy!
9-2 from Leon Goretzka - precision and power (90'+2)
What a cracking final goal in Fröttmaning! Playmaker Kimmich found himself in lots of space in a half-right position and was able to cross unchallenged towards the penalty spot. Leon Goretzka made a strong run in there and made it 9-2 with a spectacular diving header into the near corner. The midfielder celebrated his goal with his teammate Pavlović with a rehearsed boxing celebration, as the two revealed after the match. With this fighting spirit and hunger for goals, we can't wait for the season to really get going.
