Away wins don’t come much more convincing than this! On Saturday, Bayern Munich celebrated a commanding 5-0 victory on their travels to face Werder Bremen. FCB delivered an impressive attacking performance and shut up shop at the back. With 25 shots to Werder’s none, Bayern could hardly have provided more convincing statistics. “We have so much quality up front,” said Jamal Musiala, scorer of the second goal, “it's important to keep clean sheets. We were unable to do that in the past games.” A delighted Board Member for Sport Max Eberl agreed: “At the moment, it's just fun to watch.” fcbayern.com has the post-match reaction.
Reaction to the match at Werder Bremen
Max Eberl (Board Member for Sport): “We support each other. Everyone helps in defence. The opponent in possession is always under pressure and that makes it easier for our defence and for our strikers when they win the ball in high-press situations. Minjae Kim and Dayot Upamecano gave outstanding performances today. Bremen didn't have a single shot on goal. There was only one moment after 55 minutes when Michael Olise cleared in our box. That is Bayern Munich. After today's game, I'm really looking forward to putting the Lederhosen on for the Oktoberfest tomorrow. We have lads in the squad that just want to play football. If all you're doing is running after the ball, you eventually lose motivation. However, we win possession very high up the pitch at the moment and so the lads have the space to use their quality. At the moment, it's just fun to watch.”
Vincent Kompany: “Away games in the Bundesliga are always difficult to win. We couldn't ask for a better game than today's. The lads did a good job. I'm satisfied. It was a deserved win. We managed to keep a clean sheet, also because of our strikers. I'm happy when we're in good form and we showed that today. The only thing that matters is that we won today. Starting on Monday, we'll begin preparations for the Leverkusen game. Our mentality must be to not look to the past too much.”
Harry Kane: “It was a great week. Congratulations to the lads for the right attitude and mentality. Today, we played an away game against opponents who had remained unbeaten in the league for a while. The way we played with and without possession today is the kind of style we want to show in the upcoming games as well. You could tell that we kept pushing, even after the second and third goals. We are Bayern Munich. It's definitely going to be a different game against Leverkusen. They showed last season how strong they are. It's going to be a tough game. We have to show the same mentality and the same hunger for success that we showed today and in our previous games. We're playing at home, it's October, and it's going to be a great game.”
Jamal Musiala: “Our attack is in good shape at the moment. We pressed the way our coach wants us to press today. It's important to keep clean sheets. We were unable to do that in the past games. We have so much quality up front. After taking the lead, we created even more chances. We're very stable in midfield and are able to get the ball forward. It's fun to play football like that. We will encounter tougher opponents and more difficult games this season. We're using the games to get fitter. I'm not sure about the coach's plans but I don't expect he'll change much going in to the Leverkusen game.”
Alphonso Davies: “We're happy about the win but we know the next big challenge awaits. We're looking forward to the game against Leverkusen. We’re confident. They deserved to win the league last season, but we didn't enjoy watching them lift the trophy. It's definitely going to be a great clash!”
Reaction from the Werder Bremen camp
Ole Werner, (Werder Bremen head coach): “We weren't at 100% today but Bayern were. That explains the result. It's important for us to learn from this game and analyse what we need to improve. But we also have to realize we don't play Bayern Munich every week. Compared to the quality of the opposition we were inferior in all areas today.”
Mitchell Weiser (Werder Bremen): “At the end of the day, we didn't stand a chance. We had different plans but were unable to do anything in attack. The defeat was deserved.”
Michael Zetterer (Werder Bremen goalkeeper): “Obviously, you can concede goals against Bayern Munich. We all saw what they did today and what they've been doing in the past weeks. That speaks for their quality. However, I don't think you have to make it as easy for them as we did today.”
