What’s next for Bayern in the Champions League play-offs?

After beating Slovan Bratislava 3-1 in the final game of the Champions League’s league phase, Bayern finished the competition’s initial stage in 12th place. It means the Munich men will contest a two-legged play-off to earn a spot in the round of 16. They will discover their opponents when the draw is made at 12pm CET on Friday in Nyon.

Bayern’s possible play-off opponents

Bayern’s final position in the table means they will play either Celtic (finished 21st) or Manchester City (22nd) for a place in the last 16. FCB will be a seeded team and therefore play the second leg at home.

Play-off dates

The first legs are scheduled for 11/12 February, with the return fixture the following week on 18/19 February.

What happens after the play-offs?

Should Bayern progress through their play-off and reach the last 16, they will discover their opponents in another draw on 21 February. With the Champions League knockouts now taking the form of a bracket, Bayern know that a round-of-16 tie would be against either Atletico Madrid (fifth place) or Bayer Leverkusen (sixth), who qualified automatically for that stage by finishing in the top eight. The first leg in Munich would be on 4/5 March, with the return fixture on 11/12 March.
