A great accolade for Harry Kane and FC Bayern! The forward's goal to make it three in the home victory over FC Augsburg last November has been voted ARD Sportschau's Goal of the Year 2024. "It makes me very proud! As a forward you want to score goals, and it's particularly nice to score such a great goal. It was a unique goal for me, a blend of technical and physical components, plus a nice finish," Kane said, looking back at the goal: "It was a great pass from Leon (Goretzka). It was very high, I had to stretch to get it and was able to finish with my head. It was demanding in terms of technique. Certainly one of the best goals of my career. My wife was very impressed. She said she didn't know I was so flexible (laughing)."
The FCB striker artistically trapped Leon Goretzka's cross and headed home: a textbook finish! Kane received 33.11 percent of the votes, beating Florian Wirtz (opener in the international against France) and Christian Flath (direct corner for FSV Luckenwalde).
FC Bayern board member for sport Max Eberl said: "Congratulations to Harry Kane on the accolade as scorer of the 'Goal of the Year'! Harry has joined the likes of Gerd Müller, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, Lothar Matthäus, Klaus Augenthaler, Jean-Pierre Papin or Giovane Élber, who scored the Goal of the Year in their days. He's one of the best goal-getters of his generation and thrills the fans, not only with efficiency, but also with elegance, as he did with the third goal against FC Augsburg. We're proud he's part of FC Bayern."
For the first time in 25 years, a goal by an FC Bayern player has been voted Goal of the Year. Giovane Élber was the last FCB pro to win the prestigious award for his goal from the corner flag against Hansa Rostock in 1999. FC Bayern's Gerd Müller (1976), Karl-Heinz Rummenigge (1980), Jürgen Wegmann (1988), Klaus Augenthaler (1989), Lothar Matthäus (1992) and Jean-Pierre Papin (1995) had won the award beforehand. The ARD Sportschau has been recognising goalscoring works of art with the Goal of the Year award since 1971.
