Jonathan Tah will reinforce FC Bayern’s rearguard for the next season. The 29-year-old, who has been given a contract until 30 June 2029, will wear the number four shirt at FC Bayern.

Traditionally, the four is the number of uncompromising centre-halves. It stands for sturdiness, tackling strength and leadership skills – qualities that characterise Tah. It is the symbol of stability in defence, worn by the player who holds everything together at the back and, when in doubt, goes where it hurts.

The number was last held by Matthijs de Ligt and Niklas Süle. Among Tah’s predecessors in the shirt are Dante, Sammy Kuffour and Hans-Georg ‘Katsche’ Schwarzenbeck. European and world champion Schwarzenbeck in particular is known for his reliability and unconditional commitment to this day. His iconic last-minute goal against Atlético Madrid in the 1974 European Champion Clubs’ Cup final made him immortal. Jonathan Tah now joins the illustrious list.

The four is more than just a shirt number for Jonathan Tah. It is a promise – of dedication, stability and presence. And it is a commitment to a role with responsibility and a long, great tradition at FC Bayern.
