It was with great sadness that FC Bayern learned the passing of Egon Coordes at the age of 80 the day before yesterday. The coach, who most recently lived in Buxheim near Memmingen, had been a shaping figure for the German record champions as an assistant to head coach Udo Lattek and Jupp Heynckes in the 1990s. The fans will remember him as a committed expert and a character of integrity.
FC Bayern president Herbert Hainer: “FC Bayern owes a great deal to Egon Coordes. He was never in the front row but still had a big impact and played his part in the successes of the 90s. Egon Coordes will always have a special place in our memories at FC Bayern.”

Egon Coordes, who was born in Bremerhaven, contested about 200 competitive matches as a Werder Bremen and VfB Stuttgart pro. After his active career, he decided to work as a coach. He was a head coach at German clubs VfB Stuttgart, Hamburger SV and Hannover 96 as well as Al-Ahli (Dubai), Austria Vienna, FC Luzern, the Iranian Olympic team and Al-Khaleej (Saudi-Arabia).
He won the Intertoto Cup with Austria Vienna but enjoyed his most successful spell at FC Bayern. He won four German championship titles, the DFB Cup and the Supercup with the German record champions. He later worked as head analyst and was part of returnee Jupp Heynckes’ coaching staff as a match observer in 2011/12. He won three more championship titles, the Champions League, the UEFA Supercup, the Club World Cup title, the DFB Cup and the German Supercup with FC Bayern at that time.
His work at FC Bayern was an example of his entire career: straightforward, sincere and with a deep understanding of the game. For him, physical fitness was an essential factor for success. FC Bayern mourns the loss of a football coach in the best sense – and of a person with a clear attitude.
