Another extraordinary honour for Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, long-time CEO of FC Bayern Munich: he has been awarded the Personal Prize of the Bavarian Minister-President by Markus Söder. “The star of the south shines brightly: Karl-Heinz Rummenigge is an extraordinary personality both on and off the pitch,” explained Söder. “He led FC Bayern to new heights as a striker and had a decisive influence on the national team.” Especially when the going gets tough, you can rely on him, he added.
Rummenigge “formed FC Bayern into a global brand in a triumvirate with Franz Beckenbauer and Uli Hoeneß”, Söder continued. “He stands for internationality, networking, authority and foresight: together with Uli Hoeneß, he still forms a dream team today. This has an impact on the whole of Bavaria and far beyond.” With a wink, he added that Rummenigge may have been born in Westphalia, “but he definitely has the Bavarian gene”.
Rummenigge played over 300 Bundesliga matches for Bayern between 1974 and 1984, scoring 162 goals. He won several trophies as a striker with the club, including two German championships, two DFB Cups and two European Cups. He was twice a World Cup runner-up with Germany and collected the European Championship title in 1980. He was named European Footballer of the Year (now the Ballon d’Or) in 1980 and 1981. After his playing career, Rummenigge took on a number of top leadership positions at Bayern, first as vice-president from 1991 to 2002 and then as CEO until 2021. The club celebrated the biggest successes in its history during this time.
