The date for the start of FC Bayern’s Bundesliga title defence has been confirmed: on Wednesday, the Bundesliga e.V. published further details of the fixture list for the 64th season in Germany's top flight. The reigning German champions will host VfB Stuttgart at the Allianz Arena on Friday 28 August (20.30 CEST).
As part of its “City Challenge”, in which fans had to find hidden envelopes containing the match details at the respective venues, the league association had already announced the fixtures for the two local derbies between Borussia Dortmund and FC Schalke 04, as well as the opening-day opponents for Bundesliga newcomers SV Elversberg (Bayer 04 Leverkusen). The full fixture list will be published on Thursday.
Impressive record in the Bundesliga opener
Last season, FC Bayern were also involved in the opening match of the new Bundesliga campaign and got off to a flying start with a 6-0 rout of RB Leipzig. An official opener in Germany’s top flight was first played in the summer of 2002 and it will now take place for the 25th time. FC Bayern have been involved 17 times to date and have almost always enjoyed a perfect start: alongside 14 wins, the Munich side have recorded three draws.

In any case, FC Bayern have always enjoyed Matchday 1: the Munich men haven't lost a single one their last 14 opening matches of a Bundesliga season (12 wins, two draws). That's a record in the competition and one they'll cetainly be looking to extend in around eight weeks’ time.
