Robben brace seals first league win of term

New boy Arjen Robben came on and made the difference with a second-half brace as Bayern chalked up a first Bundesliga victory of the season with a 3-0 victory over champions Wolfsburg in an enthralling clash on Saturday evening.

The 69,000 full house at the Allianz Arena saw far and away Bayern’s best first half of the campaign so far, full of the energy and incisive running so conspicuous by its absence in Mainz last week. Bastian Schweinsteiger hit the bar before Mario Gomez struck an overdue opening goal on 27 minutes.

Star signing Robben made his first appearance in a red shirt after half-time and soon had the crowd on its feet with two trademark burst-and-shot moves, but it truly became a debut to remember when the Netherlands star netted on 68 and 80 minutes to seal an ultimately deserved win for his new team.

The home success in FCB's 100th match at the Allianz Arena takes Munich up to five points from four games and a far more comforting seventh place in the nascent table. Due to a break for internationals, the next fixture is not for another two weeks, when the Bavarians travel to face Borussia Dortmund.
