Bayern made it three Bundesliga wins on the bounce with an ultimately merited victory over Bavarian rivals Nürnberg on Saturday. Second-half goals from Ivica Olic and Daniel Van Buyten ensured the men in red maintained their traditionally excellent record during the world-famous Oktoberfest, the 176th edition of which opened today.
The 69,000 full house at the Allianz Arena saw Bayern enjoy much the better of the first half chances, but recalled hitman Mario Gomez put the best of the lot against the bar. Olic converted a neat Thomas Müller lay-off to open the scoring ten minutes after the restart, but just as the home side looked comfortable, FCN sub Eric Choupo-Moting levelled on the break.
Van Buyten scored his second crucial goal in four days from Arjen Robben’s cross to restore the lead eight minutes from time, after which Nürnberg heads went down and the home side cruised to the finish.
FCB boss Louis van Gaal made one change to the line-up from the 3-0 midweek win against Maccabi Haifa, restoring Gomez at centre-forward in place of Franck Ribery, with the intention of introducing the Frenchman later on as a sub.
Olic moved out to the left with Arjen Robben on the right as Munich again lined up in an attacking 4-3-3 formation, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Thomas Müller providing the support down the channels.
