Seventh win in a row sends Munich top

Bayern finally reclaimed top spot in the Bundesliga for the first time in eighteen months, albeit with their rivals still to play this weekend, courtesy of a hard-fought but deserved home win over Hoffenheim in the league’s official post-Christmas restart fixture.

The 69,000 full house at the Allianz Arena were rewarded for braving the bitter Bavarian cold when Martin Demichelis handed his side a half-time lead, and although the men in red squandered a string of presentable chances in a one-sided second period, sub Miro Klose wrapped up the points with a tap-in four minutes from the end.

Munich’s seventh win on the bounce in all competitions and eleventh league game undefeated sends them top of the standings on 36 points from 18 matches, one ahead of Bayern Leverkusen and two clear of Schalke, who play Mainz and Nuremberg on Saturday and Sunday respectively.
